7 Lessons from Tony Robbins to Unleash Your Potential

by Michael Leonard on June 23, 2021

Tony Robbins has been an influential leader in the personal development space for decades.

He’s helped tons of people create massive shifts in their lives and reach their full potential. Plus, he even coaches top athletes, celebrities, and even mentors billionaire investor Ray Dalio.

After reading his books and attending his events (one of which even included a walk across hot coals), I can say he’s the real deal.

Two words: peak performance.

He helps people unleash their potential by getting them into a different state of mind. Tony then gives people the tools and strategies to help them change their lives from the inside out.

After being a fan for years, here are seven of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from the top motivational speaker.

Life-Changing Lessons From Tony Robbins

1. Take Massive Action

If you want life to change, you have to change. No one is coming to save you - it’s up to you to put in the work.

As Tony says, “You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action.”

Taking action is number one on the list for a reason. Too many people want things; a better life, more money, a better body, etc. yet don’t take the necessary steps to make it happen.

Sure, goal setting and getting clear about what you want is important, but it’s not 100% of the equation. Instead, it’s about taking inspired action to make your goals become reality.

Action creates clarity and more importantly, momentum. Once you get into action mode, it’s easy to push through the challenging times, become resourceful, and reach your goals faster than ever.

2. Success Always Leaves Clues

Whatever you want to achieve in life, chances are someone else has already done it (unless you’re Elon Musk trying to colonize Mars). Instead of trying to figure out the road to success on your own, find someone who is doing what you want to do.

Then, find a mentor or coach that can help act as a guide along the way. Hire them or buy their books/courses/coaching to drastically speed up the learning curve. There is no need to struggle when someone else can help you avoid the common problems that you can avoid.

Don’t forget, everyone has coaching and mentorship; from billionaire CEOs to world-class athletes. This is one of the most common traits among super successful individuals.

But remember, this will only help you speed up success, it doesn’t mean that you won’t fail or want to quit at times. Remember, anytime you want to learn something new, seek out others who can help and act like a sponge when they share information with you.

3. Progress Equals Happiness

Have you ever set a goal, worked hard, achieved it, only to be a little disappointed when the challenge is over? If you’re like most people, you probably find yourself thinking… what’s next?

That’s because progress equals happiness, even more so than achieving a goal. Sure, hitting your goals is great and you should celebrate small victories and big wins, but focus on progress as much as anything.

If you’re feeling stuck and frustrated with where you are in life, focus on making progress to build momentum. Whether it’s losing weight, earning more money in your business or something else, progress will motivate you to keep going!

4. Focus on the Future, Not the Past

The past is gone, no matter how much you dwell on it, you can’t change it. Yet, so many of us fight it and think that dwelling on it will somehow make it better.

Tony has said that one of the most common themes among most people is that they have regrets about the past and spend a ton of energy on it. He’s noticed that so many people spend an enormous amount of time and energy trying to fix the past, instead of focusing on what’s ahead of them.

So instead of dwelling on something you can’t change, focus all your energy on the present and future. Do something every single day to help you move one step closer to your goals to create the future you want.

Learn from the past but don’t dwell on it.

5. Learn to Love Problems

No one wants problems, yet, we all have them. Yet, no matter who you are, “problems” are a part of life.

Whether you’re Bill Gates or a college student, everyone has problems. Sure, Bill might have smaller problems than most of us, but the point is everyone has them.

One of the most important things I’ve learned from Tony is that you need to think of problems as a gift. Reframing how you look at problems will change everything.

Instead of being an obstacle, you look at it as a chance to evolve and grow. When you do, you get to figure out who you are, what you’re made of, and take 100% responsibility for your life.

As he said, “The only problem we really have is we think we’re not supposed to have problems! Problems call us to a higher level, face and solve them now.”

Reframing problems as learning opportunities is one of the greatest gifts that you can give yourself.

6. Learn How to Get Into a Peak State

At his Unleash the Power Within event I attended, Tony talks about how he doesn’t actually like “positive thinking” but instead, helps others learn how to get into a peak state, in which you feel energized and motivated.

Here are three steps to help you get into a peak state fast:

  • Change your physiology. Think about how you feel if you’re slouched over, sitting down at your desk vs. sitting upright, with your chin up, smiling, with good posture. The way you move your body has a direct effect on your overall state. If you’re feeling tired, angry, frustrated, or any other negative emotion, move your body to change your mood.
  • Use empowering language. Robbins teaches the power of language and how it affects so many areas of your life. For example, if you say “I should hit the gym” you probably won’t as it’s not very motivating. But if you say, “I get to hit the gym so I can get in shape for summer” it has a much different effect. Make it a point to only use constructive language to yourself and when speaking with others.
  • Move your attention. The third step to get into a peak state is to move your attention. Think about the last time you were in a bad mood, chances are you were dwelling on a problem over and over again. But instead of focusing on a problem, spend 90% of your time on the solution, not the problem itself to shift your state.

7. Grow So You Can Give

Finally, don’t forget to give back as you become more successful in life.

One of the reasons Tony Robbins is highly respected is because he’s a giver. Ever since a stranger helped feed him and his family one Thanksgiving Day as a kid, he’s always given back.

Now, he feeds millions of people every single year through his charity and other ventures. As you continue to become more and more successful, don’t forget to reach back and help others in need.

Not only will it feel great, but it will help you appreciate the journey you’ve been on as well.

There’s a reason Tony has sold millions of books, audios, videos, and sold out events around the world - he helps get results. To get the most out of your life, learn how to tap into your peak state and take massive action.

Set goals, make a plan, learn to love failure, and stay relentless until you make it happen. Remember, as Tony Robbins said, “It’s not about the goal. It’s about growing to become the person that can accomplish that goal.”
